
he Great Central was the last main line built from The North through Northamptonshire to London. Our tutor Martin Bloxsom brought the subject to life for a group of 19 students from Helmdon and beyond.
We examined how the railway came to be built and how its engines, rolling stock and staffing evolved over time. We studied the financial and other problems of running a railway in the face of strong competition, and during a period of war.
In addition to the railway itself, we also learnt about the significant impact that the Great Central Railway had on the social History of the Midlands.
